ACLU
Bill of Rights Awards
The Story
The ACLU of Southern California commissions the Bill of Rights Awards annually to honor individuals who challenge the status quo and champion inclusion and belonging. The organization approached Bennett Awards to design recognition pieces that reflect both the prestige of the honor and the enduring impact of the recipients’ work. Bennett collaborated with the ACLU to translate the themes of justice, equality, and advocacy into a sculptural form that embodies courage, leadership, and lasting significance.
The Design
The awards are inspired by a torch symbolizing freedom, knowledge, and guidance, integrated seamlessly with a round base to convey stability and unity. The sculptural design balances elegance and symbolism, creating a visual representation of the recipient’s contributions to civil rights and social progress.
The Craftsmanship
Each award is precision-machined from aluminum, then bead-blasted and nickel-plated to achieve a refined, lustrous finish. Standing 11 inches tall, the awards convey both presence and permanence, making them suitable for display in offices or homes as reminders of the honorees’ achievements.
The Impact
Presented to leaders advancing civil liberties and social justice, these awards serve as lasting symbols of recognition and inspiration. They reinforce the mission of the ACLU of Southern California while celebrating the courage and dedication of individuals who shape a more inclusive and equitable society.
