For the third consecutive year, custom awards designed by Bennett Awards were presented to winners of “The Friskies”, a competition created to recognize the best cat videos on the Internet. These recognition awards, sponsored by Purina’s Friskies® Cat Food, celebrate the pop culture phenomena of cat videos and the cats that inspire them.
Throughout the first half of 2014, cat owners submitted their videos through the contest’s official website. 3 finalists were selected in each of four categories:
- FUNNY: capture a cat(s) in a humorous situation
- RES_CUTE CAT: Capture a cat(s) adopted from a rescue group or shelter enjoying life
- EPIC: Capture a cat(s) on an indoor adventure
- STRANGE: Capture a cat(s) in an unusual or striking situation
Fans then voted on the favorites to select the winners in each category. Each category winner received a $5,000 cash prize, a custom trophy designed by Bennett Awards (called a “Catuette”), and a one-year supply of Friskies cat food and cat treats.
In addition, a Grand Prize winner was selected by a panel of judges. The selection criteria included originality and overall artistic impression, audience appeal and entertainment quality, a sense that a story is being told, and portraying the cat’s perspective. The Grand Prize winner for 2014 was Chris Poole, for his “Dumpster Kitty” video in the “Strange” category. For his Grand Prize, Poole received an additional $20,000 in addition to the awards above.
The “Friskies Catuettes” were created by Bennett Awards in 2012, the inaugural year of this competition. These unique recognition trophies feature a custom cat sculpture in the shape of the Friskies cat icon. The sculpture is attached to an integrated circular pedestal with a raised relief of the Friskies logotype. The sculptures are cast in pewter, and have a gold-plated finish. They are mounted on two-tier based with personalized engraving of the award and category names.
