American Society of Mechanical Engineers Commissions New Custom Bennett Award

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) commissioned Bennett Awards to create a new, unique custom sculpture award to recognize the 100th anniversary of the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors (National Board).

The National Board was created in 1919 to promote greater safety to life and property through uniformity in the construction, installation, repair, maintenance, and inspection of pressure equipment. The National Board membership oversees adherence to laws, rules, and regulations relating to boilers and pressure vessels. The National Board Members are the chief boiler inspectors representing most states and all provinces of North America, as well as many major cities in the United States.

In recognition of this milestone, the ASME worked with Bennett Awards to create a new custom award that celebrated this achievement. The unique award design was based on a geometric bas relief sculpture in the approximate shape of a standing crest. The sculpture combined multiple geometric shapes into an integrated whole. The primary element of this sculpture was a large central trapezoid with sculpted bas relief images of iconic symbols relevant to the National Board’s 100 years of operation. Other geometric blocks buttressed each side of this sculpted trapezoid. These block shapes were affixed to a lower component shaped like a semi-circle which contained engraving about the award. This circular shape sat on top of an integrated bottom base. The entire sculpture stood approximately 19.5” tall.

The sculpture award was cast in bronze, and featured a combination of antique patina, to accentuate the bas relief images, and high-polish.

This custom award was presented to the National Board on May 8, 2019, during the prestigious National Board/ASME General Meeting Banquet at The Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah, held in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the National Board.
